The Graveyard Slot

Where to now?

My 500th post was about marriage equality which seems fitting considering we’re a couple of old ‘married’ pansies. I’ve no idea how many words this miraculous milestone represents. It must be more than 100,000, maybe a lot more. It’s been a great ride on an epic journey of little importance that’s kept me out of mischief and sober(ish). And now there’s the book. I’m often asked if I’d always intended to start a blog and write a book. The answer is no. In fact, we didn’t give any thought at all to what we’d do after we paddled ashore. One lesson we learned very early was that neither the journey nor the destination is the be all and end all. What really counts is what you do after you’ve arrived. That’s the clever bit.

I started the blog 15 months ago. Generally, I’ve written little and often, virtually every day. This strategy has worked well. However, my daily ramblings can’t continue now that I’m preoccupied with promoting the book to earn a honest crust (outside Turkey, obviously). The blog’s been good to me. It deserves my best attention. I’ve decided that the only way to do this is to change the recipe and post less often. There wasn’t a post yesterday and there won’t be one tomorrow. Will this result in plummeting ratings, a kick to the graveyard slot and cancellation of the show mid-series?  We’ll see.

And this is the reason why I can’t do it all.

  1. I think your blog posts are just the right length – mine tend to be too long, because I am making up for the fact that I don’t post often enough – and you are very regular (as my grandmother used to say about our bodily functions…) No, I very much doubt that your ratings will plummet if it’s every other day. For me at the moment, it’s every other week… which IS bad. Congratulations Jack!

  2. Well, I wish you all the best with the book – I am sure it will be a great success and you do deserve it, after all the hard work you’ve put into promoting it. But I must admit I do miss the pre-book posts which I used to enjoy and giggle over over breakfast. Hope you’ll be back to blogging before setting out to write the sequel!

  3. Bravo for setting a sane limit while opening your path to new opportunities via the book. I will miss your short, witty missives – but will look forward to them EVEN MORE now that absence will make the heart grow fonder. May your new adventures bring you Ptown way soon. 🙂

  4. It’s sometimes difficult to keep up with a post a day but it’s quality rather than quantity that I don’t think you have a problem there Jack.

  5. I think you’re established enough for your numbers not to fall. We post less often now and had the same thought but it’s actually benefited us. And anyway, we’ll all be waiting with bated breath for your next instalments now! 🙂

    1. He’s always got me by the short and curlies – thankfully! No, it’s just I spending so much at the mo to promote the book, I don’t have the time to post daily.

  6. I do miss your pre-book posts and don’t look in nearly as much now I am afraid. But we cannot expect you to blog forever. entertaining the reading public for free, and feeding the fans whilst starving in a garret yourself. It would be very boring reading a blog about where to buy the cheapest carrots at the market, how to make your own sun-cream and how to re-sole a flip-flop. A hedonistic lifestyle requires readies, so you go for it. If you can chuck an amusing morsel our way, whilst on your path to contemporary literature greatness, I for one will certainly look in occasionally.

  7. don’t think so…you’re in my blog favs list…so eventually when you post you turn up at the top of the heap! just cause I’ve already bought my Kindle copy of your book doesn’t mean you don’t have to sell more copies (does it ;-)?

  8. Thanks for all the words of support. These pansies ain’t going anywhere just yet. I’m pleased to say. I’ll just be posting slightly less often that’s all.
