I also started school at Mountbatten in 1967 and left in 1969. We lived within easy walking distance from the beach at Terendak. My class teacher was J Millard and I think the headmaster was Mr Bailey.
Sorry Janet memory isn’t great. I remember the fishponds outside the clssrooms, being in snow white and the seven dwarves, and finishing at lunchtime, spending the rest of the day at either the beach (jellyfish,) or the olympic swimming pool
Hi All We lived in Terendak from 1968 to 1971. My Sister Patricia Jolly ,went to Slim School and has been to many reunions, since. I was at Mountbatten ( Ann Jolly).Mr.Alsop was my teacher. Mum was secretary there. Does anyone remember the visit from Sir Edmund Hilary?? It was the best school days.

I certainly remember Jill. I was a relatively young teacher (deputy head) at the same time as Jill. Sadly, on retuning to England in 1966′ I failed to keep up with many ex-colleagues. Remember well: Keith Sunderland, Denis Graves as well as Archie Warford, the Head.
I certainly remember your name as my father, Archie Warford, was head of Mountbatten. I am.sure I have photos of you and dad at Mountbatten. I have been back twice once in late 1980s but was only able to get to front and back entrance to Terendak..Then in 2011 I attended a Terendak reunion and we visited the camp.and I was able to go into Mountbatten. Great memories. I am planning one last trip back combined with Myannmar at some point although who knows when we will be able to travel again. I will have a look through the photos

i attended Mountbatten school from 1966 to 1969 whilst my brother attended slim school. My family lived on Hang Tuah estate. I was fortunate to go back in 2008.These were the happiest days of my life in Malaysia.
Both my brothers were at Slim while my older sister and I were at Mountbatten. We all had a ball. We were there more or less the same as you and my brother also returned for a visit a few years ago. Quite a coincidence! 😀
Hi, I was also at Mountbatten School around 65 to 68, I remember Earl Mountbatten coming to visit the school, I had my Holy Communion and Confirmation at Corpus Christi, and lived in a lovely bungalow on Perth Ave,and my best friend, Ailsa from New Zealand lived further down the avenue towards the beach. I have such fond memories of those years, and its only now, aged 60, that, through talking with my 84 year old mother, prompted me to ‘look back’. so pleased I have.
They were great days, weren’t they? Magic memories and a perfect age to enjoy the whole experience. It’s amazing to think we were at school together though I was two years below you and my sister two years above. Both my brothers were at Slim Secondary (I think that’s what it was called). My eldest brother went back to Malaysia a few years ago and visited the camp. Sadly, much of it has simply been left to decay. The roofs of many of the houses had fallen in. 😦
I was there at the same time. I started school there in 1967 and left in 1969. Both of my brothers went to Slim school, as I remember it was kind of joined to our school. I was back in Malaya in 1993, but my tour guide would not take me back to Terendak as he said I would be disappointed.

I was deputy head at Mountbatten September 1964 to 1966. Whilst I don’t remember a Mr Alsop, perhaps he started in September 1966 by which time I was back in England, I knew Harry Brown very well. He was a wonderful music teacher at Slim School as well as the choir master at the church. He and his wife subsequently moved to New Zealand; Jennie (my wife) and I visited him there as well as having a couple of holidays together in England. He became a leading figure in New Zealand music; sadly, he died early last year.

My best friends at terrandak school were Paul Turner,Lenard Boswell,and alien rangy known as muffy;she lived in New Zealand,such wonderful two years in Malaya, had we’d afternoons off school.
I remember miss borrill well she was my first love for sure, so sweet ! it was about 1967 and we had just come from Aus I was about nine and had been previously taught by christian brothers so I didn’t know how awesome she was until later. my most vivid memory was she gave me a stamp for my collection and her kind nature is stamped on my memory.i never heard anything about her life since but am a bit out of the way in cairns.i lived in Lincoln circle next to the Reynolds Helen. was my age and had an older sister my friend was David Woodhouse and his sister sue.i remember the sides of the graded road were crystals which we buzzed at each other they made that sound as they were oblong and uneven they whistled like bombs. I should have kept a boxful. I bet they are not there now.the valves lived in the next street I remember Vivienne too you were in my class! remember little jack and Stuart Cowan. funny we both now live in cairns!

As a teacher, 64-66, I do remember Judith Suckling as a teacher. You are right in saying that Prince Phillip visited in 1964. Indeed, I have a photograph of him with the Headteacher, Archie Warford, and me when he visited a class I was teaching. Not sure if the shorts, long socks and shirt – all gloriously white – improved my teaching!
And I was in the visiting party when he landed on the school playing field in a wessex helicopter…he shook my hand. It will always be lasting memories..

I taught at the school between 1962 and 1964, then moved to Sea View school as Deputy Head. My elder daughter Julia was born in BMH Terendak and I was choirmaster at Christchurch Malacca for two years.

I certainly remember your name and I know we met socially two or three times. I was deputy head at Terendak from September 1964 for a couple of years. We were great friends of Dennis & Cynthia Turner and they stayed with us a couple of times when we retuned to England. Sadly, as we got more absorbed in family and career moves, we lost touch with them.
Remember many other names of Terendak staff, too.
Our youngest daughter, Heather, was born in the Terendak Hospital…July 1965.
Good things to remember. We did go back to Malacca a couple of times in the early 90s.

Of course I remember you. We moved schools at the same time, I believe. Very happy time for us. Dennis was at Seaview with me. I met him again in Nottinghamshire some years ago. We visited our old friend Ong Sek Poh in Malacca in 1988 and he arranged for us to do a quick tour of camp Terendak though, sadly, he is no longer with us. We still keep in close touch with Gordon & Dorothy Wood who came to Terendak in August 1962. Gordon later became Head of Port Dickson Primary school. We’re now living in Spain. Best wishes,

Hi yes I was at Mountbatten school I had two brothers Stan ,and Ron. My dad was I the army catering corps his name was Ron Roe. My mum helped out on the school busses. She also ran the cubs. I remember the swimming pool had many a great day and evening in there.
I was there in 67-68 when my parents sent me to school in Dover. Also liven I Perth avenue, next to Ann jolly

I went to Seaview school when we lived in Bukit Baru. We then moved in to camp and I then went to Mountbatten 65 till 68. The only teacher I remember is Mr Arden. I think he was RAEC

I remember the fish ponds we use to feed them red ants . Your surname is right but not sure what the christian name was…might have been Gordon but guessing a bit.
My name is Antony Kemp (Tony) & was at Terendak around 1965-1967 with my dad Colour Sergeant Richard Kemp & my mum Betty Kemp & I’m sure we moved to Malaya from number 1 Elizabeth Barracks Pirbright Camp in ‘65.
I also went to the cub hut next to the beach & loved it so much & your mum might just might have been Akela & she made me a sixer just before I left OMG mind blown!
At school…Mountbatten High or Slim school we did a play of sorts involving people from the Stone Age acting out a scene & I was called ‘IG’ (forgot my lines at one point ha ha didn’t forget that!) & we did the play after ‘The Folk’ country group sang their songs inc Bob Dylan’s “Blowing in the wind”
Sadly I lost my dad 41 years ago to cancer
(just 52yo)…mum (86yo) is on ‘end of life care’ in a nursing home so literally anytime now.
One day (I’m 65) I would love to revisit Terendak & see where I spent the most wonderful time of my life, I appreciate it’s not how we left it but memories are still strong & filled with love…great great days.
I do remember playing with a girl a lot almost next door to me & think her name was Rosemary ‘Dury or Drury’ or maybe nothing like that…a pretty girl with long fair hair.
Wonder what sort of reply I’m going to get Mr Roe!

I was at the school when the Duke came and named it mountbatten school. He arrived flying a wessex helicopter on the playing field…I was in awe..dressed in boy scout uniform he shook my hand as we formed a welcome line…happy days…happy memories..

I’m sure I went to Slim School & or Mountbatten? & remember learning to swim in the ‘Olympic’ size pool.
I was in the 1st Fort George Cubs/Scout group? (think that’s the right name) meeting at the clubhouse nr the beach.
I had the most wonderful time of my life there & see that there are Terendak reunions held every now & then, wouldn’t it be fantastic to meet someone you were at Terendak with.
Mum & dad were often found in The Commonwealth Club? doing their thing as they were both dance devotees, I would be left alone with our Malay ‘house girl’ Lee who sat with me till mum & dad returned.
I remember being in a school concert with a group called The Folk singing Bob Dylan’s’ “Blowing in the wind”…some of us kids did a sketch of prehistoric people yep bit weird & my name was “IG” catchy or what 😄
I remember being in a line outside school to welcome erm was it Prince Philip or was it Lord Mountbatten who visited the school?
Also vividly remember sitting in a Sioux helicopter (with the big bubble front screen like in TV series MASH) so suppose that was a family fun day for Terendak.
Would love to meet ex school friends & maybe re-ignite friendships…once a Terendakian always a Terendakian.
I live in Pickering North Yorkshire so I’m ‘reaching out’ as they say so let’s see who pops up. The only school names I can remember are Gordon? Roe? & a girl that lived close to me called Rosemary …? we spent quite a lot of time together, we both lived near the main road through the camp with those big rain drains.
So fingers crossed this post ignites some great times.

The reason I ask is my parents Colour Sergeant Richard Kemp & Betty Kemp were very good friends with ‘the Scott’s’ which I remember very well, can still see Mr Scott trapping his fingers in a car door & shouting out…seriously still quite vivid in my mind!
Memories do funny things when you get older but I’m sure they had a son who I was friendly with…this could be you?
I was a skinny kid just enjoying being in such a great place with mum & dad.
I was born 1st Sept 1955 so maybe we trod a similar path in the sixties but the Scott’s (maybe not yours) were defo part of mum & dads time at Terendak.

My father was in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and I attended Lord Mountbatten School I think 62-65. I recall Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip attending and Lord Mountbatten. Fun days in the “Olympic” pool learning to swim and dive, my maiden name was Horgan and mum and dad were Dennis and Peggy. Great times and find memories.

As a member of the Duke of Ed Award Scheme I remember well shaking the hand of Prince Philip when he visited. A few names come to mind, Colin Aplin and his brother Russell, also Roger Tillbrook and Tahoo Hecktor ( not sure if that is the right spelling) so long ago.😊 I also found this site by chance and reading the comments brings back fond memories.
Hi all, I too lived on Terendak in the early 60’s. I was Lynne Edwards back then and my Dad (Bill Edwards) was in the KOYLI’s. Does anyone remember the Maori’s coming to perform for us at School? I was in the front row and, being young and not knowing anything about them, was terrified. I thought they were going to kill and eat us! 🙂 We lived in Pirbright Close – happy days! School in the morning and the afternoons spent either on the beach or at the Olympic pool.
I too have such wonderful memories of my family’s time at Terendak from 1967 to 1969. Dad was the CSM of Suppport Coy, 8RAR and we iced at 109 First Ave,near the Beach Cluband the 42 Stevenson Ave, next door to RSM Lee who had 3 daughters with whom we shared a badminton Court between our bungalows. I can remember being in Snow White and I think Aladdin? Whilst at Mountbatten. Mr Sedgwick was my primary teacher and allowed us to have a class cat. Cubs and Scouts were a big part of our lives, well led by our scoutmaster Mr Galea.Unfortunately I have lost contact with most of the friends of that time but occasionally reminiss with my older brothers Rod and Ken, who attended Slim School, about our adventures.
Hi I’m Pete Allen I lived in Templar Ave I went to Sea View School while living in Bhukit Bharu, while still at Sea View moved to Bhukit Rambai. I remember some people in particular Miles Bingarapee, Dosena Bingarapee, both Australian also some other New Zealanders. I then moved to Templar Ave and started at Mountbatten School. I remember Trevor Rushby also Mr Bailey who was a teacher at Clarendon School in Tidworth near Salisbury when I was there. If anyone remembers me please reply would love to exchange memories and about how we have moved on in life.

As a teacher, 64-66, I do remember Judith Suckling as a teacher. You are right in saying that Prince Phillip visited in 1964. Indeed, I have a photograph of him with the Headteacher, Archie Warford, and me when he visited a class I was teaching. Not sure if the shorts, long socks and shirt – all gloriously white – improved my teaching!

I am just going through photos taken of Duke’s visit to Terendak.My father was the head of Mountbatten at the time so.I have quite a few photos of the visit.You might be in one of them! I was at Slim and remember him coming into our classroom. There is a Facebook group – We are Terendakians – worth joining as there are a lot of photos from.that era.

I taught at the school between 1962 and 1964, then moved to Sea View school as Deputy Head. My elder daughter Julia was born in BMH Terendak and I was choirmaster at Christchurch Malacca for two years.

I certainly remember your name and I know we met socially two or three times. I was deputy head at Terendak from September 1964 for a couple of years. We were great friends of Dennis & Cynthia Turner and they stayed with us a couple of times when we retuned to England. Sadly, as we got more absorbed in family and career moves, we lost touch with them.
Remember many other names of Terendak staff, too.
Our youngest daughter, Heather, was born in the Terendak Hospital…July 1965.
Good things to remember. We did go back to Malacca a couple of times in the early 90s.

Of course I remember you. We moved schools at the same time, I believe. Very happy time for us. Dennis was at Seaview with me. I met him again in Nottinghamshire some years ago. We visited our old friend Ong Sek Poh in Malacca in 1988 and he arranged for us to do a quick tour of camp Terendak though, sadly, he is no longer with us. We still keep in close touch with Gordon & Dorothy Wood who came to Terendak in August 1962. Gordon later became Head of Port Dickson Primary school. We’re now living in Spain. Best wishes,

Blimey i was at Terrandak 65 to 67 i remember the milk was long life and pink or chocolate both yugh. afternoons at either the Olympic pool or the beach club Me and My sister lived an 1 Wollongong close

Hi yes I was at Mountbatten school I had two brothers Stan ,and Ron. My dad was I the army catering corps his name was Ron Roe. My mum helped out on the school busses. She also ran the cubs. I remember the swimming pool had many a great day and evening in there.

I went to Seaview school when we lived in Bukit Baru. We then moved in to camp and I then went to Mountbatten 65 till 68. The only teacher I remember is Mr Arden. I think he was RAEC

Hi I went to Mountbatten school around 1965-1967 I had to brothers Ron and Stanley my mum Use to ru. The Cubs I rember doing a play the jungle book. I remember the fish ponds we use to feed them red ants . We use to go swimming in the pools while late at night and they use to be a rock of the beach we’re we use to go fishing had some great times if any one rembers us please email thanks

I’ve stumbled on this site re’ Terendak Camp in the 60’s.
Do we know each other?
Your surname is right but not sure what the christian name was…might have been Gordon but guessing a bit.
My name is Antony Kemp (Tony) & was at Terendak around 1965-1967 with my dad Colour Sergeant Richard Kemp & my mum Betty Kemp & I’m sure we moved to Malaya from number 1 Elizabeth Barracks Pirbright Camp in ‘65.
I also went to the cub hut next to the beach & loved it so much & your mum might just might have been Akela & she made me a sixer just before I left OMG mind blown!
At school…Mountbatten High or Slim school we did a play of sorts involving people from the Stone Age acting out a scene & I was called ‘IG’ (forgot my lines at one point ha ha didn’t forget that!) & we did the play after ‘The Folk’ country group sang their songs inc Bob Dylan’s “Blowing in the wind”
Sadly I lost my dad 41 years ago to cancer
(just 52yo)…mum (86yo) is on ‘end of life care’ in a nursing home so literally anytime now.
One day (I’m 65) I would love to revisit Terendak & see where I spent the most wonderful time of my life, I appreciate it’s not how we left it but memories are still strong & filled with love…great great days.
I do remember playing with a girl a lot almost next door to me & think her name was Rosemary ‘Dury or Drury’ or maybe nothing like that…a pretty girl with long fair hair.
Wonder what sort of reply I’m going to get Mr Roe!

I was at the school when the Duke came and named it mountbatten school. He arrived flying a wessex helicopter on the playing field…I was in awe..dressed in boy scout uniform he shook my hand as we formed a welcome line…happy days…happy memories..

So this is where ex-Terendak people catch up.
My name is Antony Kemp (tony) & my father Colour Sergeant Richard Kemp & my mother Betty Kemp (both sadly deceased) were at Terendak Garrison around 1965-1967 with 1st Battalion Scots Guards…with the Gurkhas?
I’m sure I went to Slim School & or Mountbatten? & remember learning to swim in the ‘Olympic’ size pool.
I was in the 1st Fort George Cubs/Scout group? (think that’s the right name) meeting at the clubhouse nr the beach.
I had the most wonderful time of my life there & see that there are Terendak reunions held every now & then, wouldn’t it be fantastic to meet someone you were at Terendak with.
Mum & dad were often found in The Commonwealth Club? doing their thing as they were both dance devotees, I would be left alone with our Malay ‘house girl’ Lee who sat with me till mum & dad returned.
I remember being in a school concert with a group called The Folk singing Bob Dylan’s’ “Blowing in the wind”…some of us kids did a sketch of prehistoric people yep bit weird & my name was “IG” catchy or what 😄
I remember being in a line outside school to welcome erm was it Prince Philip or was it Lord Mountbatten who visited the school?
Also vividly remember sitting in a Sioux helicopter (with the big bubble front screen like in TV series MASH) so suppose that was a family fun day for Terendak.
Would love to meet ex school friends & maybe re-ignite friendships…once a Terendakian always a Terendakian.
I live in Pickering North Yorkshire so I’m ‘reaching out’ as they say so let’s see who pops up. The only school names I can remember are Gordon? Roe? & a girl that lived close to me called Rosemary …? we spent quite a lot of time together, we both lived near the main road through the camp with those big rain drains.
So fingers crossed this post ignites some great times.

Were you at Terendak in the mid-sixties when the Scots Guards were there?
The reason I ask is my parents Colour Sergeant Richard Kemp & Betty Kemp were very good friends with ‘the Scott’s’ which I remember very well, can still see Mr Scott trapping his fingers in a car door & shouting out…seriously still quite vivid in my mind!
Memories do funny things when you get older but I’m sure they had a son who I was friendly with…this could be you?
I was a skinny kid just enjoying being in such a great place with mum & dad.
I was born 1st Sept 1955 so maybe we trod a similar path in the sixties but the Scott’s (maybe not yours) were defo part of mum & dads time at Terendak.

I have just found this site by chance and it is wonderful to read each of the posts and awoken so many memories. My father was in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and I attended Lord Mountbatten School I think 62-65. I recall Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip attending and Lord Mountbatten. Fun days in the “Olympic” pool learning to swim and dive, my maiden name was Horgan and mum and dad were Dennis and Peggy. Great times and find memories.

Hi Kathy I was also at Slim school, 1965 to 67, was originally in Boarding school in KL. Loved my time in Slim. As a member of the Duke of Ed Award Scheme I remember well shaking the hand of Prince Philip when he visited. A few names come to mind, Colin Aplin and his brother Russell, also Roger Tillbrook and Tahoo Hecktor ( not sure if that is the right spelling) so long ago.😊 I also found this site by chance and reading the comments brings back fond memories.

Hi all, I too lived on Terendak in the early 60’s. I was Lynne Edwards back then and my Dad (Bill Edwards) was in the KOYLI’s. Does anyone remember the Maori’s coming to perform for us at School? I was in the front row and, being young and not knowing anything about them, was terrified. I thought they were going to kill and eat us! 🙂 We lived in Pirbright Close – happy days! School in the morning and the afternoons spent either on the beach or at the Olympic pool.

I too have such wonderful memories of my family’s time at Terendak from 1967 to 1969. Dad was the CSM of Suppport Coy, 8RAR and we iced at 109 First Ave,near the Beach Cluband the 42 Stevenson Ave, next door to RSM Lee who had 3 daughters with whom we shared a badminton Court between our bungalows. I can remember being in Snow White and I think Aladdin? Whilst at Mountbatten. Mr Sedgwick was my primary teacher and allowed us to have a class cat. Cubs and Scouts were a big part of our lives, well led by our scoutmaster Mr Galea.Unfortunately I have lost contact with most of the friends of that time but occasionally reminiss with my older brothers Rod and Ken, who attended Slim School, about our adventures.

Hi I’m Pete Allen I lived in Templar Ave I went to Sea View School while living in Bhukit Bharu, while still at Sea View moved to Bhukit Rambai. I remember some people in particular Miles Bingarapee, Dosena Bingarapee, both Australian also some other New Zealanders. I then moved to Templar Ave and started at Mountbatten School. I remember Trevor Rushby also Mr Bailey who was a teacher at Clarendon School in Tidworth near Salisbury when I was there. If anyone remembers me please reply would love to exchange memories and about how we have moved on in life.
